The group of outdoor stores in Melbourne's CBD near the corner of Elizabeth St and Little Bourke St (shown on map below) stock a wide variety of gear. We have found that there are four kinds of outdoor stores, and all four kinds of shop are represented there.

- Army disposals-type stores which provide solid entry-level gear such as solid-fuel stoves and guy-ropes for a reasonable price

- specialist adventure stores which cater for more involved activities (for example, selling snow shovels, EPIRBs, climbing ropes, and water pumps) as well as clothing

- stores which focus more on trekking and overseas travel (eg: travel packs, and padlocks), but which also stock many items of use to the bushwalker or ski tourer, and

- stores which sell mostly clothing and which are (without being a snob) catering to a market segment that likes to think of itself as outdoorsy, but perhaps isn't always.
