Craig's Hut

From a cultural point of view, I find Craig's Hut extremely disappointing. For those of you who don't know, the hut was constructed in 1981 for the movie 'The Man from Snowy River', and then was reconstructed for the sequel. It was opened in its present modified form in 1993. Before seeing it, I was aware that it was not authentic. However, I was not prepared for the tourist-attraction atmosphere I encountered. Hordes of four-wheel-drivers had descended, there were a number of dogs running around, and the hut had been fenced off to keep cattle out. The area inside the fence had been landscaped with gravel paths and shrubs. There was even a wedding party doing the wedding photos on the afternoon I was there, which is apparently not uncommon. The interior of the hut contained a table, GGS trip intentions book, and paved floor. Some of the comments in Geelong Grammar's trip intentions book were instructive: "wasn't worth the drive" and "it looked better in the movie" were two examples. Get a grip, people! It's not real! If you want to see a real high country hut, go and have a look at Cope Hut.
