The graph and table below show the amount of positional error introduced into your walking by an incorrectly-set compass. For example, let's say you're planning to travel 500 metres cross-country (the green line on the graph) on a compass bearing. If your compass is five degree out (horizontal axis) then you will be just under 50 metres off-target at the end of the segment. Over 1000 metres (red line) with an error of 12 degrees you will be about 220 metres out of position..
