AM/FM radios have only a very small place in the wilderness. However, they may be of some practical use in situations where knowing the overall weather forecast for the area would be helpful, for example when deciding on the next day's activities while on a fixed camp. GPRS mobile internet from a digital mobile phone could also achieve this. The table below lists some AM/FM radio stations that we have been able to pick up in various locations. A radio with headphones may, of course, also be useful in sending a not-very-subtle message to talkative party members.

Over-reliance on electronic devices is a potential cause of problems for a party which does not have the equipment and skills to do without that device. An obvious example of this is a party which sets off with a map and GPS but no compass or spare batteries. You should never rely solely on electronic devices if the safety of your party could be compromised by the failure of the device to work properly.
