This section is about electronic devices. By that, we mean any device which uses battery power to work, such as radios and GPS units. None of the things discussed on this page should be planned as being critical to the success or failure of an expedition. However, they can make your expedition safer or more enjoyable. Sometimes they can just be heavy to carry. At other times they extend and improve your senses, abilities, accuracy, and capabilities. Remember that nothing with a battery can be relied upon absolutely, and that all such devices carry a weight penalty which may outweigh their usefulness.

Mobile Phones Mobile phones for the outdoors including GSM, CDMA, satellite, SMS, internet and WAP |

Over-reliance on electronic devices is a potential cause of problems for a party which does not have the equipment and skills to do without that device. An obvious example of this is a party which sets off with a map and GPS but no compass or spare batteries. You should never rely solely on electronic devices if the safety of your party could be compromised by the failure of the device to work properly.
